What Is the Role of the United Nations and How Does It Work

The Role of the United Nations

The United Nations is an international organization that was founded in 1945. The UN's stated aims are "to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among nations, and to promote social progress, better living standards, and human rights." To achieve these aims, the UN has several different organs and programs. Let's take a closer look at what the UN does and how it works.

The United Nations Security Council

The Security Council is one of the main organs of the UN. Its main purpose is to maintain international peace and security. The Security Council has 15 members, and each member has one vote. Decisions of the Security Council are binding on all member states.

The General Assembly

The General Assembly is the main deliberative organ of the UN. All UN member states are represented in the General Assembly, and each has one vote. The General Assembly discusses important issues such as peace and security, human rights, and international law. It also adopts resolutions on these issues, which are non-binding on member states.

The Secretariat
The Secretariat is the administrative arm of the UN. It is headed by the Secretary-General, appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council. The Secretariat carries out the day-to-day work of the UN.

UN Funds and Programs

There are several different UN funds and programs which work to achieve the goals of the organization. Some of these include:

  • The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which works to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development;

  • The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which works to improve children's lives;

  • The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which works to improve maternal health;

  • The World Food Programme (WFP), which provides food assistance to people in need;

  • The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which protects refugees;

Environmental Concern

The 90s were a significant decade for the environment. After years of discussion, the United Nations finally took action on environmental issues. In 1987, they banned chlorofluorocarbons, which were damaging the ozone layer.

Then, in 1992, they held a summit in Rio de Janeiro to discuss sustainable development. This was a big moment for the environmental movement, as it brought together 17,000 people worldwide. The 90s were a time when people began to realize the importance of protecting the environment.

Women Members of the UN

The 193 UN ambassadors consist of 31 women ambassadors from worldwide. There are now six women on the UN Security Council, the most in history. This is a good sign for Global Goal 5, which calls for gender equality.

The women on the Security Council are from different countries and regions, and they will help to champion the cause of gender equality around the world. Thanks to them, more women will have a voice in decisions affecting millions of people's lives. With their help, we can ensure that women have an equal say in the decisions that shape our world.
